Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: Halloween
Image via Wikipedia
Here's the question again:
Name the horror film that features two characters who have the same names as characters from two different Alfred Hitchcock movies.
The answer:
Halloween features homages to Alfred Hitchcock in the form of character names pulled from two of his movies: Tommy Doyle was named for Detective Thomas J. Doyle from Rear Window and Sam Loomis came from Psycho.
Here are the LAMBs who got it right:
boylorne from 24 Hours to Midnight: The Blog!
Jeff from The Good Indoorsman
Here's the next question:
Name the movie that lists Melinda Dillon's name correctly in the opening credits but incorrectly in the ending credits, where she's listed as "Melinda Dillion."
Please include the following information in your response:
1. The movie name
2. Your name
3. Your blog name
4. Your blog URL
Send your submission to Carla of Tricky Movie Trivia at info[@]trickymovietrivia.com by midnight EDT September 11, 2009.
Good luck!

Brutally Blunt Blog Blustering #13: the Large Association of Movie Blogs
It's Blusterin' Time!
Mixing it up a little here; lucky number 13, or unlucky?
And remember: Blustering should be a two-way street; if you've asked to be blustered, you better be a blusterer.
If you're new to this feature or need a refresher, click the label at the bottom of this post and see the first few posts. Otherwise, here's the basics:
What I'll do is list a site; you're asked to critique it. But here's the catch: to induce the most honest reactions, don't leave the comment using your normal alias/login - instead, go anonymous, and be as brutally honest (or complimentary) as you wish to be. Also, be specific, and naturally, don't be rude. If I deem anything inappropriate, I'll have no problem deleting the comment.
So, go to the site listed below, familiarize yourself with it for a few minutes, then come back and leave some constructive criticism and/or comments that you have.

It's mostly just a hobby of mine, and I do it for fun, but I would love to share my blog with more people.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
Interactive. I love feedback.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?

How did you hear about the LAMB?

The LAMBs Pulse will be taken for...
As per the previous post on this topic, and a request from Jess, I will post here on Fridays which film or films The LAMB's Pulse will be taken for. It will almost always be only for the weekend's widest releases. This weekend's qualifying releases are: The Final Destination and Halloween 2.
Hope to see lots of participation next week, assuming anyone actually wants to see those flicks, which is understandly doubtful. Looks like I picked a bad week to start this feature...

PLUG: Blog Action Day
Hey BAD bloggers!
It's almost that time of year again, and this time I have some exciting news to announce.
When we started Blog Action Day two years ago, we had no idea how large it would become. Now that it's grown beyond our wildest expectations, we've decided that it's time Blog Action Day had a more permanent home where it can continue to expand.
To that end, we've asked the social issue blog network Change.org to take over the project and make Blog Action Day bigger than ever. I'm thrilled to say that they've agreed, and their team has already started working on preparing for this year's event on October 15th.
As a first step, the Change.org team wants to get your thoughts on the selection of this year's topic. To give your feedback on the topics being considered or suggest your own, click the link below to a short 5-question survey:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=vgxlY3JzQGvGg_2fmM_2fr240g_3d_3d
If you have any questions, additional suggestions, or want to get involved beyond blogging, email Robin Beck, Change.org's Director of Organizing, at robin@change.org.
Thanks for all the support – we look forward to having you all involved in this year's event, and you'll being hearing more from the folks at Change.org over the coming weeks as we all get ready for Blog Action Day 2009.
Finally, don't forget to add us on Twitter:

LAMB #346 - Cinematropolis
[Editor's Note: This site's url is still functioning, but the last post clearly states that the site is no longer being updated. A moment of silence please...]

URL: http://cinematropolis.wordpress.com/
Site Name: Cinematropolis
Categories: Reviews, Editorials, News, Classic film and general choices. Although I cover film and news from everywhere I also specialize in news local to where I live, in Baltimore.
Rating: PG-13 perhaps. I don't use any language or extremely lurid details but some of the film photos can feature graphic violence from time to time.
What is the main focus of your site?
The main focus of my site is to talk about and explore the world of film, and how it relates to the community I live in, and how that community contributes to the art form of film at large.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
I'm looking to get experience as a critical writer and I'm doing it for personal enjoyment as well as to gather writing samples.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
I'd prefer an interactive community.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
Since May 8th, so by this point, its a little over 3 months old. Although the last two weeks haven't allowed me to post as much, I try to average about 10 posts a week, and sometimes its a bit more than that.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Blade Runner, The Wizard of Oz, The Grapes of Wrath
How did you hear about the LAMB?

Checking the LAMB's pulse with a LAMBScores addendum
There's been something bothering me for a long time with LAMBScores.
When I first started it, I would put up the scores relatively quickly - maybe a few days after the film was released. This was met with derision from a few folks (or at least one), and I was asked to push it back to a week, then two. It's now at four.
I don't know about you all, but I tend to read/see most about a certain film with a week of its release - either from viewing and reviewing it myself or from reading other's reviews, which normally come within that time frame.
I understand the desire to include as many people in on the party as possible, and I know that all can't produce a review within a few days or a week (hell, I barely do anymore), but I think there's something to be said for freshness and relevancy.
With all that in mind, I've decided to add a new/related feature that would be LAMBScores partner - it will show the major films released over the weekend with a list of submitted reviews and it is NOT replacing LAMBScores; the user-submitted scores will continue to be posted in full after their allotted weeks in theaters. The end result, hopefully, is that the LAMB is seen as a aggregating source for the best of movie blogging and a great resource if you want many fresh takes (from bloggers with a shared interest and whom travel in many of the same circles as you, which is key) on a given film or films.
The logistics of doing this for 300+ sites without requiring much work from you all has proved to be a bit of a quandry. What I've ended up doing is this: I added every available LAMBs' RSS feed to my Bloglines account. At the beginning of each week, I will search amongst those feeds for reviews from LAMBs that have written them.
I had thought that that process would be enough to suffice, but I came upon an issue when I realized that not everyone uses a 5-star/lamb rating system, if they use any at all. Even on my own site, I don't use a numerical system, so how was I suppose to translate other's reviews into LAMBScores, especially if I were to come across a site that assigns nothing resembling a grade to a film.
My solution is one that I should have thought about long ago - one that I think would be a good idea regardless of this new LAMBScore addendum. Why not put the word "LAMBScore" and the corresponding score image at the bottom of a review? That way, I can simply do a search for, say, "Inglourious Basterds LAMBScore" and receive a complete, accurate list of reviews with applicable scores. All you have to do is add a bit of code at the end of your reviews and BAM - simultaneously, a stronger sense of community and a concise list of LAMB reviews for the latest releases are achieved.
Below are the images and code for all of the available LAMBScores. Before you see 11 sets of images/code and worry that it's cumbersome and/or that you'll never remember all that code, keep in mind that the code for all is exactly the same save for the final bit of the image's name, and my naming structure is fairly simple, as you'll see.
For an example of how this looks in action, see this review that I've retroactively added a LAMBScore to. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, let me know.
So, if you'd like to take part in this, simply add the following to your reviews, effective today:
1. The word "LAMBScore" (all one word; if it's not, I won't find it)
2. The appropriate code from below

LAMB #345 - Reel Advice Movie Reviews
URL: http://www.reeladvice.net/
Site Name: Reel Advice Movie Reviews
Categories: Reviews, News
Rating: PG
What is the main focus of your site?
The main focus of our site is to give simple reviews for the latest movies that are shown here in the Philippines but we occasionally do the old film or indie film review via our Underground brand.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
Well, both Vit and I observed how much the perspectives of film critics differ from the normal person. Our goal for Reel Advice is to give reviews that are more attuned to the regular joe. We do this by trying to give very simple and concise reviews based on our own gut feelings while watching films. It also probably helps that we have no technical background when it comes to film-making and the like.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
We always prefer interaction between people. Communication is always the key and simply put, no one is perfect. The occasional feedback won't hurt right?
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
We have been blogging for almost 1 and a half year already. We post reviews around twice to thrice a week.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Citizen Kane
Schindler's List
The Shawshank Redemption
How did you hear about the LAMB?
I saw your link button in one of the blogs I surfed.

LAMB #344 - zombots

URL: http://zombots.blogspot.com/
Site Name: zombots
Categories: Reviews
Rating: With some course language and descriptions of blood and gore, I'd rate my site PG13 (which is kind of ironic given that I generally disapprove of PG13 horror movies).
What is the main focus of your site?
The simple fact is that I love to talk about horror movies so I started blogging as a way to vent my frustrations or laud the films I thought were being passed over by mainstream audiences. In my reviews--some of which are spoilerific--I try to address key issues which I think either hurt or aided the film. Basically, I try to back up my claims while keeping the reviews within a reasonable word count.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
There are so many movies out there, I can't possibly watch them all, and I've got a list in the back of my brain to which I keep adding titles. I try to post a least a three or four reviews a month, but sometimes my academic schedule gets in the way and I only get to one or two. In addition to writing reviews on zombots, I also host a podcast about once a week, and my commitment to TheAvod (theavod.blogspot.com) supersedes my devotion to zombots.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
I am the only contributor to my blog but I happily encourage people to respond with a comments section.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
I've been blogging for about a year and the site is 99% horror and 1% Steven Seagal. I try to review lesser-known films but I don't go out of my way to track down the really obscure titles, and the occasional blockbuster does slip through.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
I hope that zombots is deemed a good fit for LAMB and that you don't think less of me because three of my favourite movies are From Dusk Til Dawn, Wrong Turn, and Sleeping Beauty.
How did you hear about the LAMB?
I randomly heard about LAMB through Google, I think it was. Or possibly twitter. Honestly, I can't remember!
Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
None.

LAMB Chops FYI
Can you believe that Blake had the nerve to go on vacation, shirking his Chops responsiblities all the way to Cabo san Barcelona or wherever he's made his way to? I can't - the LAMB requires constant attention, like one of those Tamigochis or whatever those virtual pets from the 90s were called that all of you owned and loved.
Anyway, no Chops until at least this Saturday, and maybe not until next Tuesday.

LAMB #343 - The Schleicher Spin

URL: http://davethenovelist.wordpress.com/
Site Name: The Schleicher Spin
Categories: Reviews, Editorials, Classic Film, Contemporary Film, Book to Film Adaptations, Books
Rating: PG-13
What is the main focus of your site?
The main focus of The Schleicher Spin is reviews of books and films both classic and contemporary, with film reviews/discussion normally taking precedence. The blog makes special notice of films that have been adapted from books. The blog originally started as a way to promote my writing and quickly turned into a forum for book and film talk and a place to share my reviews. There are also occasional travel related posts.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
The goal of The Schleicher Spin is to present my spin on books and films and to encourage others to share their views through the comment forms and monthly polls.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
I prefer interactive blogging where I present my reviews/ideas and then respond to readers who are encouraged to leave comments and add their own spin on the movies or books being discussed.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
The Schleicher Spin (formerly known simply as The Official Blog of Author D. H. Schleicher) has been around since December of 2006. I try to put up at least one new post a week, if not more when possible, and respond daily to comments from readers. I also welcome Guest Bloggers to submit articles/posts/reviews relating to books and films.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
The Third Man, Network, There Will Be Blood
How did you hear about the LAMB?
I found out about the LAMB from the link on The Dancing Image movie blog.

LAMB #342 - 24 Hours to Midnight: The Blog!

URL: http://24hourstomidnight.wordpress.com/
Site Name: 24 Hours to Midnight: The Blog!
Categories: Reviews, Editorials, Horror, Humor, Classic Film, General
Rating: PG-13 (Occasional language; any harsh videos are marked NSFW).
What is the main focus of your site?
Our favourite bad movies, reviewed in haiku. Other features include "Degrees" - Linking ourselves, Kevin Bacon style, to Uwe Boll; "Unwatchable" - Commenting on movies so bad even we couldn't finish them; and "Tara Reid's School for Real Smart Ladies" - spotlight on dumb girls playing smart ladies through the use of props (glasses, books, lab coats, etc.).
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
The #1 goal is posterity - we started blogging as a method of recording the movies we watched and loved, so we wouldn't forget them. We also wanted to share other movies with each other. We also enjoy making each other laugh. So, once we started blogging, we realized that other people dig it, too.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
We like trading bad movie stories, anecdotes, and memories. Because we deal in popular and obscure stuff, we welcome suggestions.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
Since February 1, 2009. With 145 entries as of today, I'd say we're semi-daily, or at least close to it.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Pootie Tang.
How did you hear about the LAMB?

Day 3
Foolish Blatherings takes a look at Seven Samurai, maybe Kurosawa's most famous film.
Day 2
Anh Khoi Do and Movies reviewed Ran, and puts it forth as Kurosawa's greatest film.
Day 1
Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob compared Rashomon the movie to the short stories it was adapted from, then gave the movie his highest rating.
Korova Theatre Presents has a review of Seven Samurai, featuring maybe the most awesome movie poster ever. Unsurprisingly, the film receives an A+.
Matte Havoc takes a look at Stray Dog and Rashomon, and also has a fairly in-depth, two-part YouTube video about Kurosawa's influences and those he influenced.
Japan Cinema has reviewed not one, not two, but three Kurosawa films: Ran, Seven Samurai, and Kagemusha. His custom banners for each film are, as always, very impressive.
The Movie Projector looks at The Bad Sleep Well and High and Low, two of Kurosawa's 60's efforts.

LAMB #341 - Entertain Me! Screen Insight
[Editor's note: Entertain Me! is now Screen Insight.]
URL: http://www.screeninsight.com/
Site Name: Screen Insight
Categories: Reviews, Classic Film, General
Rating: PG
What is the main focus of your site?
I want to review and contextualise every aspect of cinema. It shows the reason I watched the film and then expands upon this with information about the film itself - and why it is important. This means it could be Hitchcock's The Ring being reviewed or Slumdog Millionnaire. Nothing is ignored on the site.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
I am trying to become a better analyser of films - trying to perfect my 'voice', in terms of writing and by writing a blog I force myself to research and, essentially, revise the information I have learnt by explaining it to others. Apparently, through reading information you remember 10% of the information, through teaching the information you learn something like 70%. This blog forces me to be aware of the information I learn in my personal life on cinema. In the long term, I hope to write non-fiction books on cinema and this will help me establish my name, get contacts and ultimately become a better writer.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
Interactive - as you can see from my answer to the last question, I want to learn from my mistakes and become more knowledgeable about my 'craft' and the only way I can do that is either listening to other people views and opinions or arguing issues out with others.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
I have been on blogger for years but, initially, found I had little purpose in writing a blog about what I am doing with my life. This focus on film reviews has a clearer purpose and I have been doing this since December 2008, officially since April 2009. As a teacher, I update regularly during holidays and then more staggered during term time. When I write a lot of reviews I will 'release' them every two days. Currently I have six reviews waiting to go over the couple of weeks.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Jurassic Park (many years of my life was spent watching this as a child)
The Godfather (Initially it was Part II, but the more I watch this one, the better it is)
Unbreakable (I am a huge M. Night Shyamalan fan)
How did you hear about the LAMB?
Apparently you need to comment and use other peoples blogs to get more interest to yours - and the majority of the movie blogs i visited had this logo at the side! I look forward to being a LAMB member myself!
Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
What do you expect from readers of you blog?
I am keen to hear other peoples views on my writing and my opinion n films - so i can improve my work and become a much more professional writer of film.
