LAMB #437 - Cinema Romantico

URL: http://cinemaromantico.blogspot.com/
Site Name: Cinema Romantico
Categories: Reviews, Rants
Rating: PG-13

What is the main focus of your site?
Primarily new movie reviews with many other cinema related rants sprinkled in.

What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
This blog is just a really good outlet for me. I like to consider myself a writer and I'd go insane and if I couldn't write.

Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
I guess up until now it's like I've been the teacher. A very, very melodramatic teacher. I don't have as much as I'd like to make it moreinteractive.

How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
I've been blogging for 4 1/2 years and typically update 5 times a week.

Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Last of the Mohicans, Million Dollar Baby, The Myth of Fingerprints.

How did you hear about the LAMB?
A fellow blogger nominated me for a Kreativ Blogger Award and suggested this site.

Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
None.

LAMB #436 - Dollar Bin Horror

URL: http://dollarbinhorror.blogspot.com/
Site Name: Dollar Bin Horror
Categories: Reviews, Horror, Classic Film
Rating: PG-13

What is the main focus of your site?
To show my readers what horror films and books you can find on a budget and to spotlight under ground or unknown horror people.

What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
I blog simply because I love horror but I would one day like to make short horror films myself.

Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
An interactive community. I love input and ideas from the readers.

How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
Almost 4 months and almost daily.

Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Saw
Nosferatu
Suspiria

How did you hear about the LAMB?
Through Porkhead's Horror Movie Hole.

Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
I think the LAMB is a great idea and a perfect way to expose blogs and I hope you consider mine :)

LAMB Casting: A Streetcar Named Desire Ep. 1 Pt. 2

Andrew here again from Encore’s World of Film & TV. Thanks to all the participants in the first run of LAMB Casting. We now move on to the second portion of the exercise; you LAMBs must now decide which of the casts is best. Because I’m neurotic like that I’m going to omit the names of the participants to make the voting that more fun. So here are the four options, do your voting.

I know, it’s not Brando and Kazan but which of these productions would you be most interested in seeing? Polls close on Friday, then I’ll be here to give my thoughts on the competition. Happy voting.

PLUG: Life of a Cinephile and Bibliophile

Me again. Have another blogathon up. This one's on Christopher Nolan. BTW, be sure to leave comments on the page.

Here's the info (http://movienut14.blogspot.com/2010/01/christopher-nolan-blog-thon.html).

[Editor's note: I can not vouch for the public domain-ness of these films, but I did a small bit of research and it appears as though they check out. Still, venture at your own risk and the LAMB retains no responsibility and all that legal jazz.]

Pitch the LAMB: To Infinity and Beyond

They say that there are no good ideas left in Hollywood...so let's give them some! Welcome to Pitch the LAMB a new monthly feature designed to both promote your blog and showcase your creativity at the same time.

Hi I am CS, the small mind behind Big Thoughts From A Small Mind, and I will be overseeing this newly revamped column for The LAMB. Pitch the LAMB allows you, the movie blogger, to create the movies you really want to see on the big screen. Each month I will post three helpful tools to get your creative juices flowing: 1) A movie genre, 2) A selection of movies from that particular genre, and 3) 10 random words usually associated with the genre. All you have to do is come up with an original idea for a movie (include a title and who would star) and post it on your blog.

The "pitch" can be in any form you wish: a brief plot synopsis, a one page script, a movie trailer, a simple paragraph, an outline of the characters involved, a movie poster with brief description, etc. Heck, your pitch can even be in the form of a movie review! Remember it is your film, and your blog, so pitch the movie however you want.

Once you have posted your film idea on your blog, send me an email (with a link to the post) at bigthoughtssmallmind@hotmail.com. At the end of each month, I will post the links to all the submissions on The LAMB.

Keeping with this week's buzz surrounding Avatar's success and the launch of Apple's IPad, it was only fitting that our inaugural Pitch the LAMB be...

Movie Genre: Science Fiction

Examples of Genre: The Matrix, Moon, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Wall-E, Avatar, Solaris, Twelve Monkeys, Back to the Future, Akira

10 Random Words Often Used in the Genre: Clone, Future, Portal, Species, Planet, Religion, Device, Robot, Desolate, Order.

Lets hear your movie pitches!

Remember to email me the blog link to your movie pitch once you have posted it. Deadline for submissions is February 25, 2010.

Press Release: Total Film's 600 Film Blogs You Might Have Missed

I was notified earlier this morning by Sam Turner at thistimeitwillbedifferent that UK film magazine Total Film published an article today called 600 Movie Blogs You Might Have Missed, a fairly definitive list of many movie blogs that are active in and around the movie blogging community.

Not surprisingly, members of the LAMB are heavily involved. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to scan more than a couple names on the 10-page list without coming across one; by my totally unofficial count, I'd say that there are at least 300 LAMBs making up the list, some of which are even lucky enough to get their site banners included as part of a gallery.

I got in touch with the author (Dan Goodswen) to thank him for the list and make him aware of the LAMB (if he wasn't already, which he was), and he had this to say:

I had an intern helping with research for the article and she found the LAMB pretty early on - in all our research you were the only site with a comprehensive list of blogs, so we found it extremely useful, and are endebted to you for our 600 blogs feature.

My intention with the list was to create a one stop shop for the cream of movie blogs out there (I was aiming for 1000), but we quickly realised this would be near impossible, with the vast amount of blogs out there and the frequency of blogs closing and opening. Making a 100% accurate list was just too ambitious, so i capped the list at 600, and let my intern of the hook (she was a babbling, incoherent mess by that point). So the feature is something of a success, in drawing attention to all these great blogs, but unfortunately there were many I didn't find - hopefully i can do a follow up feature down the line, 400 More Movie Blogs You Might Have Missed or something.
If you wish to help Dan and TotalFilm out, there's a comments section at the bottom of the post where users are posting their "forgotten" sites; if you don't see yours on the list, go ahead and register and add it to the comments.

Thanks to TotalFilm for spotlighting so many hard-working bloggers out there, and to Sam for alerting me to this quickly.

LAMB #435 - Dave's Film & DVD Reviews

URL: http://davesfilmreviews.blogspot.com/
Site Name: Dave's Film & DVD Reviews
Categories: Reviews, Classic Film, General
Rating: PG-13

What is the main focus of your site?
To review a wide variety of films from the latest releases to classics to trashy action. No stone is left unturned and all films get a fair deal.

What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
I'm trying to voice and share my opinions on films as well as occasionally introduce people to titles they might not have given a chance before.

Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
I prefer an interactive community, although due to the relative youth of my site I'm yet to establish much of a community. Hopefully things will change.

How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
This blog has been up for just over 4 months and I tend to update it around 5 or 6 times a month. I used to have my own Geocities review site which I started probably about 10 years ago and kept running fairly regularly for about 3 years. I also currently contribute to Row Three. I try and keep posts different between that and my blog - any films I watch that have already been covered by Row Three or I feel don't belong there go up on Dave's Film & DVD Reviews. I also post links to my Row Three articles on my blog to keep it even more active.

Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Once Upon a Time in the West
This is Spinal Tap
The Godfather

How did you hear about the LAMB?
A link on another blog (sorry forgotten which one!)

Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
As a side note, I'm also a filmmaker, working as a cameraman and editor for a small production company in the UK, so I pretty much live and breath film. I'm also quite heavily into my music too - listening and performing.

Trailer Talk Thursday: It's like a crippled tree reaching for heaven

Hey there everybody and welcome to my second edition of Trailer Talk Thursday. I am Travis McCollum of The Movie Encyclopedia and I'm here to analyze one of the latest trailers.

Sundance Film Festival is a pretty big event for filmmakers and film fans alike. Independent directors get to showcase their talents in hope of getting picked up, famous directors debut their new soon to be smash hit and if nothing else we get a lot of interesting trailers for movies we may or may not end up seeing. This year is no exception and one of the films that has me pretty excited is a small indie comedy called "Cyrus."

Not the head of the Gramercy Riffs and certainly not the spawn of Billy Ray Cyrus, "Cyrus" is the newest film from the Duplass brothers. If you have no idea who these two are, they are famous for making really good indie films like 2008s Baghead and 2005s The Puffy Chair. They have a unique style of making everything look very natural and have a knack for blending serious and seriously funny to make a great movie.

Along with the stylistic expertise of the Duplass brothers you got some great talent in front of the camera. The film follows John, (played by the hilarious John C Reilly) a somewhat socially awkward man who is looking for love after losing the love of his life (Catherine Keener). One day he meets Molly (Marisa Tomei) and falls hard for her. Everything SEEMS to be going okay until John meets the other man in Molly's life...Cyrus (Jonah Hill), her grown son living at home.

Without further ado here is the trailer:

Just from the initial impressions this film gets a good couple of laughs out of me. John C. Reilly has got a knack for playing lovable losers and it really shows in this film. His rendition of "Don't You Want Me" is hilarious and his interactions with Cyrus are pretty funny. Jonah Hill actually seems pretty funny in this movie, downplaying that angry pottymouth that we've seen him have and opting more for a subtlety to get laughs which seems to work a lot better for him. Overall the acting seems pretty solid and storywise it looks pretty interesting.

But that's just my opinion. Tell me what you think. Comment down below and give your opinions on "Cyrus."

Well that'll do it for this weeks edition of Trailer Talk Thursday. I'm Travis McCollum and I'll see you next time.

PS: If you have any suggestions, trailers you want me to look at ect. feel free to email me at tjmac510@hotmail.com

LAMB #434 - Rach on Film

[Editor's note: This site was previously known as Rach's Media Opinions.]

URL: http://rachonfilm.blogspot.com/
Site Name: Rach on Film
Categories: Reviews, Horror, General, Exploitation (or Grindhouse)
Rating: R (not a lot of swearing, but I'd like the option and a lot of movies I review are R)

What is the main focus of your site?
The main focus of my site is to review/discuss movies that I've recently watched. I'm focusing on emptying my "To watch" list, 1001 movies to see before you die, and I review movies for Cool(Shite) (www.coolshite.net) which I also post on my own blog. I also talk about books and music, but not as often as movies.

What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
I use my blog as an outlet for my opinions on movies and other media. I realised that not many people around me spent as much time thinking about movies as I did and really didn't want to talk about them as often as I did. In order to avoid pissing off everyone around me I decided to start a blog. It's worked for me so far.

Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
I definitely prefer an interactive community for my blog. I definitely think of myself as a peer, not a teacher.

How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
I've been movie blogging for about 3.5 months. I try to update twice a week, though sometimes it's more, sometimes less.

Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Death Proof
Oldboy
O Brother, Where Art Thou?

How did you hear about the LAMB?

Our Acronym is Better Than Theirs - Picking the LAMB's Top 10 Foreign Films

The results are in, and the LAMB has picked its Top 10 Foreign Films (for background on this, click here). There were a total of 44 voters, with their votes spread out amongst 253 films. What that means is that, with a smaller voting base than usual, and a wide, wide variety of films, that it was difficult for a film to stand out from the crowd, but the few that did (the top seven) were head and shoulders above the rest.

Here are your winners (1st place votes in parentheses):

10. The Lives of Others - 34 points from 6 voters (1)
9. M - 35 points from 6 voters (0)
8. Rules of the Game - 48 points from 7 voters (3)
7. (of course) Seven Samurai - 61 points from 7 (of course) voters (5)
6. Let the Right One In - 63 points from 12 voters (0)
5. Pan's Labyrinth - 72 points from 8 voters (3)
4. City of God - 73 points from 9 voters (2)
3. Oldboy - 75 points from 9 voters (2)
2. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - 80 points from 13 voters (1)
1. Amelie - 88 points from 12 voters (3)

So...how many of your Top 10 made the list? If you'd like to see yours and all the other votes, scroll down. A post has been added with all of them, but I have dated it prior to this post so it won't clutter the page.

Others receiving 1st-place votes: 8.5, A Tale of Two Sisters, Amarcord, Children of Men (??), Children of Paradise, Cinema Paradiso, Contempt, Damnation, Delicatessen, Departures, Elevator to the Gallows, Fanny and Alexander (2), Grave of the Fireflies, High and Low, ikiru, Mouchette, Pontypool, Run Lola Run , Still Walking, The Double Life of Veronique, Vincere, Volver, Y Tu Mama Tambien

As for our next topic: it's time to unleash the LIONs! That's right, it's LIONs for LAMBs 2009, in which we take a look back at the last year in film. I'm asking you for your Top 10, Bottom 5, Best Actor and Actress and more. Shouldn't take you but a few minutes to fill out, and the Top 10 is the only required entry should you not wish to participate in the rest of it. This poll will run through February 21st, with the results to be doled out in the final days before the Academy Awards air (on March 7th).

The poll is already up - be sure to read the instructions. Go vote now so I don't have to hassle you later! Thanks as usual - let's get a great turnout for this one!

LAMB Chops!

Today's Choice Chops comes from Reel Whore, cinema's bitch (his words, not mine). He's just kicked off his week-long awards event, creating lists of the top seven everything of 2009. He titles them his 'confessions.' The post chosen for Choice Chops is titled '07 of '09: Confessions Part II.' In Part II, Reel Whore selects the sexiest actor of 2009, as well as lists the movies he most regrets not having seen yet. In this quote, he postures his pick for the sexiest man in acting of 2009:

Many of you may be disappointed to know that I did not see Twilight: New Moon in 2009. Therefore, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner were not eligible, so put it back in your pants, ladies and gentlemen. Despite the absence of those strapping lads, I am certain the nominees for sexiest men of 2009 will still make you swoon. Some nominees played dickish characters while others were too-good-to-be-true golden boys. In all cases one thing remains constant; they exuded hotness from every pore without trying.

This post, like all of his, is hilarious, and manages to actually hit the nail on the proverbial head. Check out the full article here.

PLUG: The LAMB...?

Steve Johnston and Brian Dutkewich of The Cynical Blog are more than mere podcasters; they have their own radio show! Airing on Sundays on Victoria, Canada's own C-FAX 1070, the Cynics re-purpose their show as a podcast (minus the air breaks and commercials), and I'm glad they do. Being pros and all, their podcast is one of the slickest you'll hear, and the guys' segments are clearly defined and individually entertaining, going over a featured topic, followed by picks from the vault, some high-tech talk and their DVD picks of the week.

The Cynics joined the LAMB a long, long time ago (#166). Somewhere along the way, though, Steve got the hair-brained idea that I might be a worthy guest on their live radio show.

Well, I did it this past Sunday. Going live to Victoria, BC and beyond (just how far beyond, I couldn't tell you), I did a phoner with the guys as we discussed The LAMB, my own movie site Blog Cabins, and The Book of Eli. Hopefully, I acquitted myself and didn't sound like too much of a jackass despite my proclivity for the word "definitely" (I barely recognize my voice, by the way, so don't be alarmed if you've heard it previously). Lucky for you, you can judge for yourself - the whole show can be heard here, though as you might've guessed, I recommend becoming a regular listener to their podcast (or show, should you happen to live around Victoria, which you likely don't).

Big thanks go out to the Cynics for having me on; it was a lot of fun and quite the honor.

Got a Press Release, something to Plug, or a Screener available for review (or some combination of the three)? Ok, well don't get all crazy about it. Just click here and give me the details - I'll handle the rest.

LAMB Casting: A Streetcar Named Desire

The other day Fletch made a call for new contributors to LAMB, so here I am with a new feature for you fellow LAMBS. LAMB Casting. I'm Andrew from Encore's World of Film & TV.

I know that it’s blasphemous and all, but I'm sure I’m not the only one who imagines re-casting movies, books, TV shows, classics. You can’t help but think, who’d be a good modern day Rhett Butler or Eleanor of Aquitaine? Imagine Titanic without Kate and Leo? It’s always interesting to think what some films would like today with our modern actors, we like to say that the good ones are gone, but I’m sure there are some actors good and able to fill their shoes. So let’s get our own casting session going on right here, let’s do some casting LAMB style. We’ll start of big and easy: A Streetcar Named Desire. I know, I know – no one can touch Brando and Leigh. But we can dream can’t we? Now all we need is four sizzling actors and a damned good director. I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers, so why don’t the interested strangers [fellow LAMBS] do some casting?

Who’s your Blanche? Stanley? Mitch? Stella? And who’s going to direct it? Send your choices to this address. You have until Saturday, then I'll post the choices and let you LAMBS vote. Happpy casting!

Poll results; new poll

Apparently, the day that I set up the last poll was a bad day for me. Let's forget the fact that the entire poll itself was decided long before I made it active - as if something other than Unforgiven wouldn't win in a landslide - I even neglected to include the film that might have finished 2nd (probably received most if not all of the "other" votes): Mystic River. The poll should have just asked what the 2nd-best Eastwood-directed film was - that might have actually been a contest.

The new poll asks not your opinion but tests your prognostication skills. Hot on the heels of its Golden Globes big wins, how many Oscar noms do you see Avatar earning?

Brutally Blunt Blog Blustering #29: Acheter et entretenir sa tronçonneuse

It's Blusterin' Time!

And remember: Blustering should be a two-way street; if you've asked to be blustered, you better be a blusterer.

If you're new to this feature or need a refresher, click the label at the bottom of this post and see the first few posts. Otherwise, here's the basics:

What I'll do is list a site; you're asked to critique it. But here's the catch: to induce the most honest reactions, don't leave the comment using your normal alias/login - instead, go anonymous, and be as brutally honest (or complimentary) as you wish to be. Also, be specific, and naturally, don't be rude. If I deem anything inappropriate, I'll have no problem deleting the comment.

So, go to the site listed below, familiarize yourself with it for a few minutes, then come back and leave some constructive criticism and/or comments that you have.

Site: Acheter et entretenir sa tronçonneuse (nsfw)
LAMB#: 90
URL:
http://acheteretentretenirsatronconneuse.com/blog/

If you're up for this treatment for your site (and you're a LAMB), send me an email with the subject "Bluster Me!" If you've already done so, no need to do it again - you're on the list, and these will be going up in order of when I received your email (by the way, it could take a while for your site to be Blustered, since I don't run this more than once a week or so).

LAMB #433 - kaatib's reviews

URL: http://deadletterhouse.blogspot.com/
Site Name: kaatib's reviews
Categories: Reviews
Rating: R

What is the main focus of your site?
The focus of the site is to review movies, irrespective of year and genre from a critical theorist position. The blog will not offer any rating for the movies. Nor will the blog indulge in any complete exposition of the plot. The blog will rather take certain thematic and formal element of a movie and analyse that. Hence it is not a complete review of a movie, but a partial analysis of a partial aspect of a movie.

The reviews will also be a means of reflecting on general concerns and non-concerns of life.

What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
Kaatib is a graduate student in critical humanities, and maintains the blog to both hone his analytical skills as well as hear from readers their varied opinions, approaches and to have a share of their insight.

Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
Kaatib prefers an interactive community, and do not claim to be anymore knowledgeable than any of the readers.

How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
The blog was initially started as a General one, with movie reviews included. But it has now turned into a full time movie blog. Reader can expect updates once in four days.

Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
1) Der Untergang (The Downfall), for its powerful aural and visual juxtaposition of tragedy, desperation and revelry; and also for its compelling narration; 2) The Underground for its political humour; 3) The Discreet Charms of the Bourgeoisie for its satire.

How did you hear about the LAMB?
I saw LAMB as I was searching for movie blogs on Google. I visited your site and was interested.
Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
None.

LAMB #432 - Minty's Menagarie

URL: http://mintyblonde.wordpress.com/
Site Name: Minty's Menagarie
Categories: Reviews, News, Horror, Classic Film
Rating: R

What is the main focus of your site?
I blog film reviews of all the films I see at the cinema, I go at least once a week and managed 69 visits last year!! I see a variety of films being a regular patron of the National Film Theatre here in London, I cover the London Film Festival and go and see films varying from Avatar to Tokyo Story which were my last two reviews.

What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
Personally I just love seeing, writing and researching movies and if I can convince one person to see a film that may not have heard about then I've achieved something. Professionally I would like to develop this into a paid activity if I'm honest - I have written for sites like soundonsite.org - but I'm not enormously ambitious in that direction.

Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
Interactive if preferable, although I do hope that my knowledge can 'educate; readers - jeez that sounds a bit arrogant :)

How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
Blogging for three and a half years, post entries roughly every three or four days.

Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
So many - 2001: A Space Odyssey, Assault on Precinct 13, Au Hazard Balthazar....

How did you hear about the LAMB?
A reader was kind enough to leave a comment on my site and he's a member of LAMB.

Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
None.

LAMB Chops!

Today's Choice Chop comes from the website Bargain Bin Review. BBR has started a new section of their website called Bloggin' Bin Revue, where they dare to review the films that no one would ever want to watch probably, let alone spend time writing about it online. In their new feature, Bad Movies, Good Eats, they offer some interesting and, they claim, delicious recipes to go along with some truly awful movies. Check out their post, Bad Movies, Good Eats: Shark In Venice Edition, where you'll learn how to make pasta with anchovy sauce, pan fried raddichio and zaleti to perfectly compliment the film, Shark In Venice.

LAMBcast #11

The LAMBcast has moved! Due to its previous host no longer accepting new uploads, we've moved to Podomatic. I've transferred over our latest episode, in which we discuss our most anticipated for 2010, along with episode #10, for those that might have missed that one.

Podomatic has some great features, but their embeddable player is not one of them, as it's too wide for the sidebars and can't be narrowed properly. Instead, it will be included in posts such as this, and you can also find the link in the left sidebar in the Podcast Roundup. However, if you'd like to add the player to your site, click the little arrow in the top left corner of the player and copy the code.

This episode featured me as host, along with:

* Nick Jobe of Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob,
* Travis McCollum of The Movie Encyclopedia,
* and Rachel Thuro of Rachel's Reel Reviews.

Join us either as a listener or as a fellow podcaster! For more information on the LAMBcast, check out the topic at the LAMB Forums.

As usual, the music, as provided royalty-free by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech website, is the bomb. Big thanks to Kevin for providing this service.

Also, you can find us on iTunes; just go to the Podcasts section and search for "LAMBcast." [Note: iTunes has yet to update the feeds per my request, so for this ep, please just go to our Podomatic page and subscribe from there.] And hey - while you're on iTunes, who don't you go ahead and either rate the LAMBcast or write a review of it. Better yet, do both! It'll help us get noticed by the overlords at Apple and earn worldwide fame...or something like that.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, we'd love to hear them.
