Today's choice chop comes from the folks at Japan Cinema. They took the time took the time to rank the top ten greatest Asian remakes (read: Hollywood bastardization, the best of). I didn't even realize some of these picks were even based on films from our neighbors on the other side of the Pacific. Some movies that made the list? Eight Below, Bangkok Dangerous (what the what?), and The Ring. I won't give away number one, but I think you'll all agree with japan Cinema's decision. Check out the whole review here.

The Pitches:
First up, Rick Swift of Iratefilms.com offers up a fictional review of his film starring Hayden Panettiere. The film not only cements Panettiere as a serious actress, but it also sheds light on the issue of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Let's see...young actress playing against type, serious issue, tragic love story...Panettiere may want to get her Oscar dress ready!
Iratefilms.com presents "In The Spirit of Piece"
When it comes to casting, Fletch at Blog Cabins has decided to conduct a search for an unknown to play the lead role of Mitch Montgomery. Mitch is the mischievous 15 year-old who will do anything, including being buried alive, to get the attention of the girl of his dreams. Word around town is that Universal and Miramax are currently in a bidding war for the rights to distribute the film.
Blog Cabins presents "You Did What?"
Simon, the mastermind behind Four of Them, offers up a story for the hipster inside all of us. This may be the shortest pitch of the group but the cast alone, which features some of Hollywood's hottest young actors, makes this film a must see. TMZ is reporting that Morgan Freeman liked the idea so much that he offered to take a pay cut just to be in the film.
Four of Them presents "Rhymes with Duck"
Andrew of Encore's World of Film & TV conjures up a tragic period piece about a woman, Margaret, torn between what her heart wants and what others want from her. According to Variety, there is a buzz building for the film amongst Academy insiders. Andrew is letting his readers come up with a title for the film, if you have a suggestion for a good title be sure to let him know.
Encore's World of Film & TV presents "Untitled"
Lastly, Big Thoughts From A Small Mind brings us a tale of friendship on the open road. Entertainment Weekly reports that this small indie film is still looking for financing. Though P.T. Anderson has been linked as a possible director.
Big Thoughts From A Small Mind presents "Mutiny, I Promise You"

PLUG: The Dark of the Matinee
North America's biggest documentary film festival, HOT DOCS, is coming to Toronto from April 29th to May 9th. The line-up announced includes features about the art of waitressing, The American energy race, the scandalous career of Jack Abramoff, a former anorexic turned competitive eater, and an orangutan.
(Don't laugh - the orangutan flick looks VERY avant garde)
The Dark of The Matinee will be providing extensive coverage including reactions to screenings, conversations with directors, special doc-centered episodes of The Matineecast, and much more.
The Hot Docs website with schedules and info regarding all the films and events can be found here (http://www.hotdocs.ca/festival/) and all of my festival coverage can be found here (http://mcneilmatinee.blogspot.com/search/label/hot%20docs).
Got a Press Release, something to Plug, or a Screener available for review (or some combination of the three)? Ok, well don't get all crazy about it. Just click here and give me the details - I'll handle the rest.

LAMB #482 - /moviemongrel/

URL: http://www.moviemongrel.blogspot.com/
Site Name: /moviemongrel/
Categories: Reviews, General
Rating: R
What is the main focus of your site?
Typically I try and post mostly about unknown indie films that deserve more attention than they are currently getting. I do however stray into the mainstream, with film like Avatar, and Zombieland having already been reviewed on the site.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
I am trying to turn the regular movie-goer, into someone who loves film. Take the people who go to the Avatars, and Transformers, and try to get them into films like Moon, and Oldboy.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
As much as I would like my blog to be interactive, I've not yet reached a large enough audience. I do however usually have a poll for the current film, and highly encourage people to tell me when I'm wrong.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
On this blog, I've been writing for about 3 months, but overall, about a year. I usually post weekly, or twice weekly.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
1. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
2. Donnie Darko
Only three? Oh, you guys are mean, but why not
3. Synecdoche, New York
How did you hear about the LAMB?
I first heard about it through Porkhead's Horror Review Hole.

Brutally Blunt Blog Blustering #32: Ross v Ross
It's Blusterin' Time (again)!
And remember: Blustering should be a two-way street; if you've asked to be blustered, you better be a blusterer.
If you're new to this feature or need a refresher, click the label at the bottom of this post and see the first few posts. Otherwise, here's the basics:
What I'll do is list a site; you're asked to critique it. But here's the catch: to induce the most honest reactions, don't leave the comment using your normal alias/login - instead, go anonymous, and be as brutally honest (or complimentary) as you wish to be. Also, be specific, and naturally, don't be rude. If I deem anything inappropriate, I'll have no problem deleting the comment.
So, go to the site listed below, familiarize yourself with it for a few minutes, then come back and leave some constructive criticism and/or comments that you have.
Site: Ross v Ross
LAMB#: 405
URL: http://www.rossvross.com/
If you're up for this treatment for your site (and you're a LAMB), send me an email with the subject "Bluster Me!" If you've already done so, no need to do it again - you're on the list, and these will be going up in order of when I received your email (by the way, it could take a while for your site to be Blustered, since I don't run this more than once a week or so).

LAMBcast #16
We take a detour from our normal single topic episode to discuss three tidbits of movie news/controversies, going from the Twilight saga to Tim Burton to Repo Men. On hand are host Dylan Fields, as well as Nick Jobe, Mike Mendez and Travis McCollum. That's followed up by a couple games of Last LAMB Standing and some Trailer Talk.![]()
If you're interested, you too can be a LAMBcaster - we love new blood! For more information on the LAMBcast, check out the topic at the LAMB Forums.
As usual, the music, as provided royalty-free by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech website, is the bomb. Big thanks to Kevin for providing this service.
You can find us on iTunes; just go to the Podcasts section and search for "LAMBcast." And hey - while you're on iTunes, who don't you go ahead and either rate the LAMBcast or write a review of it. Better yet, do both! It'll help us get noticed by the overlords at Apple and earn worldwide fame...or something like that.

REMINDER: Pitch the LAMB (Deadline March 30th)
Helpful Tips: Do not over think it. Keep your pitch simple and have fun with it. If you are stuck on what to write, take three or four items from the words/phrases list and try to weave them into a sentence. If you are still stuck, try coming up with a a random title for the film. As we have seen with Hot Tub Time Machine and Snakes on a Plane, sometimes the film will write itself given the proper title. Remember the "pitch" can be as long or as short as you like. If you only come up with four or five lines, still submit it! Chances are good that it will still be more creative than some the films being released these days.
Movie Genre: Coming-of-Age
10 words/phrases to get you started:
- Working
- He's going to kill you...
- Loner
- She does not know I am alive...
- Hey Frankie...
- Kissed
- Do not tell Dad...
- Virginity
- You did what?
- Grounded
Thanks to those who have already sent in their submissions.

LAMB #478 - Cineviews

URL: http://cineviews.wordpress.com/
Site Name: Cineviews
Categories: Reviews, General, News, Editorials
Rating: PG-13
What is the main focus of your site?
Movie reviews, but also film commentary and editorials about different things. This includes analysis of different aspects of different films.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
I'm trying to get my voice heard. I want to get my views on film out there, to other people, and blogging is about the best way to get this done.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
I prefer an interactive community. Even those who teach film have things to learn. The best way is through discussion and debate.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
I've been blogging since 2008. I post reviews whenever I write them. Sometimes that's a few a week, sometimes it's more rare than that. It depends on my schedule and the time I have available. But I try to post something, whether it's a new review or a piece of commentary on something, every week.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Brokeback Mountain, Amadeus, Raging Bull
How did you hear about the LAMB?
Through other bloggers who belong to it. I saw the button on their site and checked it out.
Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
I don't have much to say other than I have a real desire to get my voice heard by other people. Blogging, especially about something like movies, sometimes feels like a road to nowhere. The key is networking, and getting my blog seen and read by more people. LAMB is one way for that to happen.

LAMB Chops!
Today's Choice Chop comes from Cold Fusion Video Reviews. Nathan over there, took the time to a review a film from 2007 called The Stitcher; a film I've never heard of. It turns out that there's good reason I hadn't heard, or seen this flick, and Nate has a good time ripping it to shreds (isn't it more fun writing about shitty movies, than it is about the really good ones?). Here's an exerpt:
I was just going to write this off as a lackluster, pointless exercise in aping the dubious charms of the slasher flicks of a generation past… until, with ten minutes to go, the movie introduced what may be the worst climactic plot twist in the history of cinema. This is worse than the stuff M. Night Shyamalan scrawls idly on a napkin before tossing it aside. It seemed more like something from a Monty Python sketch than a plot point one would include without irony, but I could detect no humorous intent behind it.

PLUG: iCheck Movies
iCheck, like Flickchart a few months ago, appears to be somewhat in its infancy, so the list of movies isn't altogether comprehensive, but they've got a great headstart with various compilation lists (IMDb's Top 250, A.V. Club list(s), 1000 Movies to See Before You Die - that kind of thing). There are currently about 6,000 movies in their database. If you're wanting to know what you've seen, what you haven't, and perhaps what you should, it's a pretty good place to start, and it's not bogged down by overcomplications - simply scan lists of movies and click the check mark of those that you've seen. A running tally (and more details, should you wish to delve further) will be compiled.
Got a Press Release, something to Plug, or a Screener available for review (or some combination of the three)? Ok, well don't get all crazy about it. Just click here and give me the details - I'll handle the rest.

Poll results; new poll
If the LAMBs are anything, they're devout Academy Awards watchers on the whole - 90% planned to watch the ceremony in one form or another. No middle ground Maybes, though - this was a Yes/No proposition all the way.
Since I suspected y'all were Oscar hounds, I then gave you the chance to alter one aspect of the show - would it be a chance to the awards themselves (combining the Sound categories earned 18% of the vote) or perhaps to the Academy's choice of host (getting Neil Patrick Harris involved got 13%). In the end, the most controversial aspect for the last nine months proved to be your choice, as 39% of you elected to trim the fat of the land and cut the Best Picture category back down to the five nominess we're all used to.
New poll is glomming onto the March to Box Office Madness contest and asks you which of the available choices do you think has the best chance to break from the also-ran pack and become a box office champ.

March to Box Office Madness 2010!
It's back!
Due to circumstances beyond my control, there's a limited window of opportinuty to get in on the game - today is March 23 and all entries must be submitted to be no later than midnight, April 2. The good news is that it shouldn't take but a few minutes for you to complete the entire process.
If you're a fan of sports at all, or have ever worked in an office, there's a good to great chance that you're aware of the phenomenon that strikes America this time of year. That's right - it's March Madness, the 64 (er, 65) team college basketball tournament that drains efficiency from thousands of companies as workers kill their time filling out their brackets and subsequently trying to sneak in actually watching the games of the first few rounds of the tournament. It's one big semi-gambling semi-orgy - and everyone semi-loves it.
The idea:
With the NCAA tournament in full force, and with my joint film and sports appreciation, I got the idea to run a box office game the same way that the tournament is run. 32 films, one box office champion, many shining moments.
So, what you'll do is click on the link provided below, download your bracket, fill it by picking the movie for each matchup that you think will have the higher box office total, and send it to me by April 2.
The rules:
1. For each matchup, select which film will have the higher box office. Continue through the bracket until a champion has been crowned.
2. Scoring per round will be 1-2-4-8-12, for a possible total of 76 points (see table in workbook).
3. For the tie-breaker, enter your predicted top 5 films (box office) from the ones listed. One point for will be rewarded for each correct film, and an additional point for proper placement, for a potential 10 points. In the case of a tie, if one person's tie-breaker portion is not filled out, the other will win.
4. Brackets MUST be turned in (sent to blogcabins@yahoo.com) no later than April 2.
5. Box office data will be counted from April 2 - September 20, 2010.
6. One entry per person.
The prizes:
Still slightly up in the air, but most likely the same kind of deal as done in year's past (a t-shirt and a DVD of your choosing from Amazon.com valued at up to $19.99). However, this year, I was hoping to get the community involved in the prize-giving (to paraphrase Forrest Gump, I am not...a rich...man), so if there's something you can offer to the prize pool, please let me know. Hopefully, we can get a nice booty going. We had 34 players last year, so just a few items will make it that much more worth it.
The link to your bracket (if having troubles - right click, Save Target As):
http://blogcabins.webs.com/March%20to%20Box%20Office%20Madness2010.xls
* Please enter your picks using the same titles I have entered in the master bracket, even if they aren't technically accurate; slight changes are made for formatting issues, and having the names match makes the scoring go that much quicker. Please don't re-format the file in any way if possible. Enter your names and picks and go! *
The banner:
Finally, what fun would this be if it's just a few people? This game is open to EVERYONE. I want this to be BIG! I've made the banner that you see in the sidebar, and I'd love it if you'd put it on your site as well (if possible). Let's do this right! With any luck, everyone will be doing it next year.
The code:
<a href="http://largeassmovieblogs.blogspot.com/2010/03/march-to-box-office-madness-2010.html" target="_blank"><img border="0" alt="Large Association of Movie Blogs" src="http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y82/dyjafi/marchboxbanner200.jpg"/></a>
Good luck, and be sure to get me your brackets by April 2! Any questions, comments, suggestions, or prize offerings, email me at blogcabins@yahoo.com.

LAMB #473 - Lost in the Movies
[Editor's Note: This site's url is no longer functioning. A moment of silence please...]

URL: http://lostinthemovies.blogspot.com/
Site Name: Lost in the Movies
Categories: Reviews
Rating: PG-13
What is the main focus of your site?
Reviews of films in theaters & new to DVD.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
As I wrote in the intro to the site, "For the past two years, as I've focused on the classics in viewing and writing, I've seen a lot of great movies, but fallen out of touch with what's going on at the moment, for better or worse. On my end, hopefully this site will rectify that; on your end, hopefully I can bring you a new perspective and stimulate interesting discussion on new releases."
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
Interactive - speak up!
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
This blog is brand new, and during the first few weeks I will post about 4-5 reviews a week. After that, probably a new release every Sunday and a new DVD every Wednesday.
While this blog has just started up, I've been running The Dancing Image since July 2008 (a LAMB member since August 2008!). I also maintain a blogging "hub" at The Sun's Not Yellow and write for Wonders in the Dark.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Keeping with the contemporary slant I'll name my favorite three of the past decade: Mulholland Dr., Lost in Translation, and Wall-E.
How did you hear about the LAMB?
Someone introduced me way back when, but I can't remember who!
Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
None.

REMINDER: Pitch the LAMB

A custom-made LAMB button/banner for the gore-minded
Horror bloggers, this one's just for you. Okay, it's open to anyone, but I can see why it might have a somewhat limited appeal. Thanks go out to Ghidorah of How to Buy and Maintain Your Chainsaw for its creation. I approve of it's usage and it has been added to the gallery of buttons on the Spread some LAMB love page - feel free to use it.
