Trailer Talk Thursday: The Hangover Part II and Everything Must Go

Hey everyone, Travis of The Movie Encyclopedia here with another edition of Trailer Talk Thursday where I bring you the latest trailers to hit the silver screen.

Now I was bombarded with trailers this week (hey it happens every so often) and there were a few that caught my eye. That said I usually only do one or two a week so not every trailer gets its time in the spotlight. That or my opinion of the trailer is so minute that I can't really write an entire article on them. A few that come to mind are The Three Musketeers in 3D, Mr. Poppers Penguins, Midnight in Paris and Sympathy for Delicious, all which have come out recently. Three Musketeers looks like Medieval Resident Evil (even comes with Victorian Mila Jovovich), Penguins looks like a decent kids movie, Paris looks like yet another Woody Allen movie I'll probably see eventually but not on my immediate "to see" list and Delicious looks like a heartfelt, preachy film that some will probably love or hate depending on their opinion of a higher power.

With those out of the way I did see two trailers that I think are worth talking about more in detail: The Hangover Part II and Everything Must Go.

First up...Hangover Part II-
Before I was a film blogger I was just your average journal blogger who talked about his everyday life. That blog is dead and gone now that I have TME but I always kept the transcript of one post: a review of The Hangover. To date that is the earliest review I ever remember publishing. It looks laughable compared to my stuff now but I'm sentimental. I digress.

The Hangover Part II is the follow up to the mega surprise hit The Hangover. I don't know what it was but that film was lightning in a bottle, both commercially and critically and it launched the career of Zach Galifianakis, as well as helping Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms become household names. The Hangover is now a 21st century classic in the minds of people and so it came to no ones surprise that they were greenlighting a sequel.

A Teaser was released about a month ago and it caused a roar of cheering and applause when I first saw it at my local theater. I know I'm excited but I'm cautious. After watching the full length trailer, my caution seems more rational then it was before: it seems like more of the same. Now that's not a bad thing per se but sometimes being too similar can be the downfall of an otherwise good movie. I mean you have the guys getting drunk, waking up with mysterious things on them and in their pockets, losing someone and not knowing where he is and there is an animal wandering about. Add in Chang, the small crazed gangster from the first movie and it really seems like a rehash of the original.

But I'm optimistic that it will be good, I did laugh a lot, so without further ado here is the trailer:

Next up...Everything Must Go-
I like Will Ferrell I really do. Having said that I do get somewhat tired of him when I see him in the same role over and over. That's why I was happy when Stranger Than Fiction came out, a film that let let him be funny but also let him show his dramatic side. He can do drama well when he wants to and I think he's a better actor when he does mix it up. Everything Must Go, his latest movie, seems to luckily be going down that STF track.

Based on a short story by famed author Raymond Carver, Ferrell plays Nick, an alcoholic car salesman who has lost his job, his house and his wife, all within a short span of time. So what does he do? He lives on his front lawn, refusing to get up and leave. But of course that is against the law, or at least in the town where the movie takes place, and is forced to hold a yard sale, thereby killing two birds with one stone: letting him live on his lawn and getting rid of some of his stuff he doesn't need anymore.

After watching the trailer I'm optimistic but the early reviews leave me less so. Critics have seemed to not like the movie saying Ferrell is too "one note" and can't handle being a serious actor but I think I'll reserve judgement until I see the film for myself.

Here is the trailer:
But these are just my opinions. Tell me what you think in the comments below and I will see you all next week on Trailer Talk Thursday.

Poll Results; New Polls

Well it's good to know that people didn't participate in the LION Awards or LAMB Devours the Oscars due to forgetting. The majority of poll participants say they did participate in LIONs and Devours. A tie for second place were the new LAMBs who weren't around during the features and the folks who didn't see enough films to participate. It's good to know that only four LAMBs claimed no interest at all.

As for the format of the LIONs, it seems the majority prefers voting for their top 5 in each category. That's cool. Extra math for me, but the results feel more thorough.

Now it's time to start talking LAMMY Awards! (Click here if you have no idea what a "LAMMY Award" is.) The following are last year's categories:

Best Design
Best Blog
Best Blog Name
Most Prolific
Best Blog-a-thon/Meme
Funniest Writer
Brainiac Award
Best Random LAMB Banner
Best Overall Post
Best Horror/Sci-Fi Blog
Best Classic Film Blog
Best Festival/Awards Coverage
Best New LAMB (starting with LAMB #517)
Best Podcast
Best Movie Reviewer

The first poll will ask which category you want to go. The one (maybe two) with the most votes will not be in this year's awards.

Here are previous awards that have been retired (links to ones that may need further explanation):

Best Ratings System
Most Likely to Get Paid
Best Use of Widgetology
Most Ambitious
Best Running Feature
Best Theme
Best Impression of JD Salinger
Best Impression of Bob Dylan
Best Use of Technology (Alternative Media)

The second poll wants to know if any of these need to come out of retirement to replace whatever current category(ies) is ousted. If you choose "Other" please comment or email me with suggestions. I'll leave the polls up for a couple of weeks and once we have the results the nomination process will begin.

The LAMMYs belong to all of us so please decide what categories are worthy of your votes!

The LAMBs in the Director's ChairEvent #15 starring
Spike Lee
March 25th to 27th, 2011

There is something a little bit different about the material that is presented today. It is the first time that a single website has submitted so much material for a Director’s Chair installment that I have included a separate section just for any remaining material that was not included with the other categories. A large amount of gratitude goes to Surrender to the Void for such a strong turnout for the event.

LAMBs in the Director's Chair #15.1

The LAMBs in the Director's ChairEvent #15 starring
Spike Lee
March 25th to 27th, 2011

The first reported movie that Spike Lee had directed was a student film for Morehouse College. He named the short film Last Hustle in Brooklyn (1977). It appears his fascination with New York has shown up very early in his move making career. This is an interesting piece of trivia about Lee, since he was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, which is also the location of the Morehouse College campus where he attended college as an undergraduate student. When he shifted over to his graduate studies in the early 1980s he enrolled at New York University Film School where he directed Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads (1983). Spike Lee has evolved into a filmmaker who tells stories as a form of social observation with an emphasis upon racial relations in America. The most famous of all his earliest of films would be Do the Right Thing (1989), which had garnered an Oscar award nomination for best original screenplay of the year and is known for its story about racial conflict in the Brooklyn neighborhood.

Trailer Talk Thursday: The Bang Bang Club and Captain America

Hey everybody, Travis McCollum of The Movie Encyclopedia here with another edition of Trailer Talk Thursday, where I bring you the latest trailers to hit the silver screen.

A lot of trailers have hit the web recently but two that have garnered a ton of buzz, both positive and negative, have been the film adaptation of the auto-biography "The Bang Bang Club: Snapshots from a Hidden War" which was written by two of the members (the other two are dead) and the much awaited debut of the Captain America feature trailer. No more 30 second spots or still images, we get a full length look at what we are to expect this summer.

First up is The Bang Bang Club-
I'll give you a second to Wikipedia what The Bang Bang Club is...go on. You good? Well in short they were a group of photographers who took controversial pictures during the Apartheid period in South Africa, specifically around the early 90s. One of their most famous photographs is this (I won't post it on here for the faint of heart), which went on to win a Pulitzer Prize. The man who took it committed suicide in 1994 because of many reasons, the biggest being the images he saw and photographed haunted him and he couldn't take it anymore.

In 2006 Dan Krauss made a documentary about Kevin Carter (the man who committed suicide) and it was nominated for an Academy Award. Now 5 years later South African documentary filmmaker Steven Silver is making a feature length film about The Bang Bang Club starring Ryan Phillipe, Taylor Kitsch and Malin Akerman.

Here is the trailer:

So what do I think? Well while I'm not the biggest Ryan Phillipe fan, I must admit he's grown as an actor in the past couple years. While his accent seems a little hinky (or at least when I hear it) I think he delivers some good emotion into the performance and he could be potentially pretty good. And I've always been a giant Ackerman supporter so she already has my vote of confidence. Honestly this movie could either be a really good eye opening drama or it could be a heavy handed message for peace. I'm hoping for the former.

Next is Captain America-
If you are a frequent reader of T 3 then you will know that I already covered the 30 second Super Bowl ad for this movie. But 30 seconds wasn't enough for me and I've been waiting with bated breath for a feature length trailer to arrive. Considering the Cap's terrible luck with film so far, the feature length trailer could have been terrible or epic. It is the latter most definitely. I don't know what it is but there is something about this trailer that screams awesome. The nods to other comics (look for Stark Sr), Hugo Weaving as a villain (yay) and the overall sense of scale and importance in this film makes it one to watch out for this summer.

If you want more information on the movie or the horrid history of the Cap then check my previous Trailer Talk Thursday post about him.

Now...the trailer:

Yeah...AWESOME!

But as usual these are just my opinions. Leave a comment in the section below and tell me what you think and I will see you all next week on Trailer Talk Thursday.
